It’s amazing to me how I can go quiet on facebook and instantly everyone starts to assume that something is wrong. Well first let me reassure you that nothing is wrong and this spell of quiet is something that has brought about a lot of good.
You see, I went to a conference in September and it really changed my life. I went prepared to learn new things to grow my business, improve my skills, and find out more tips on how to be ‘successful’. In reality, the second I got there, I quickly realized that this wasn’t just your average photography conference…
There I was surrounded by over 100 other ‘creative’ women and instantly I knew that my life, business, and everything I came there thinking I knew was about to be shaken up and I’m not talking a little shaken. I’m talking about that kind that leaves you in an absolute puddle on the floor (yep #uglycry) but then when you get back up on your feet, you have a renewed purpose, vision, and clarity that you’ve been seeking for so long.
There were so many things I could say about the Pursuit 31 Conference but this video sums it up way better than I could ever do it justice….trust me, you want to watch this
WOW right?!! If you would love to see more pictures from the conference, you can check them out HERE!
And if that wasn’t enough to stir me, I attended a workshop with Justin and Mary Marantz a few weeks ago. Have you ever met someone that as soon as they come in the room and start talking, they instantly put you at ease and make you feel like you’ve always known them? Well that’s Mary and I just can’t tell you enough how much I admire her and paired with Justin well they are simply amazing! Not only are they incredibly talented and open to growing others but the purpose behind their business is just as equally important to their success.
What does this mean for the direction that I’m headed? We all want to make a difference in our lives. We want to know what we did mattered and left it’s mark, right?
SO WHAT IS MY WHY? Why am I doing this job called photography, what am I hoping to accomplish, and more importantly who am I trying to impact….
(insert several months of really taking time to remember why I felt called down this road…there are lots of other things I could have done but this is where I felt my passion truly ignite in photography)
The reason I am a photographer is to build genuine relationships, preserve memories that will create a legacy and not just my legacy but that of those that step in front of my lens, and draw out true emotion and joy in every moment.
It goes beyond snapping a picture and means so much more to me. You see everything I do now revolving my business goes back to that mission statement and if I can’t uphold it to that statement then it needs to go! It gives me this litmus test so that I don’t lose focus and forget the direction I’m going…
Now I’m not saying I will never use social media or post on facebook again. I do think that it can be a useful tool BUT I can spend the majority of my time chasing virtual ‘likes’ and building this community on facebook that puts my business on a virtual pedestal
I can invest that time in genuine relationships around me, in my community, and with my clients.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR WHY?
I encourage you that if you’ve never taken time to sit down and think through your why, DO IT! Do it today! It will give you a new sense of purpose of clarity. Your ‘why’ will probably look much different than mine and that is ok! I love what Bob Goff said…. ‘GO BE YOU’!
As photographers, I feel we can get caught in this swirling vortex and not able to find focus around us or where we are going because we are so busy comparing ourselves to one another.
What if we cheered each other on, what if we inspired one another to be exactly who we are called to be and not like someone else…’A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle’.
